Pat Welsh first got his hands on a Kodak Instamatic camera in 1975 and he photographed everything that moved, breathed, and sat silent. Always one to hone and perfect a craft, he sought out varied and visually intriguing images. He was now on a life-long journey. Studying composition, light theory, and aesthetics at the Ohio Institute of Photography in Dayton, Ohio catapulted him on his current path: communicating ideas, information, and concepts into the digital imaging mediums. Not long after graduating he went on to produce a video collection called Feline Features. This series of tapes, designed for cats to watch was an immediate sensation. The publicity generated landed Welsh a spot on CBS News, the David Letterman Show, Current Affair, Telemundo, and the New York Times. “I produced those videos totally as a gag, but when people began ordering them by the box loads I saw how powerful television communications could be,” says Welsh. He worked in drag racing motorsports production with Diamond P Sports in St. Petersburg, Florida. Programs were edited live with five cameramen capturing all of the action that were then shown nationally on cable television. Welsh Media Productions, Incorporated was formed in Fort Lauderdale, Florida The documentary Wilderness 99 highlighting a solo week long 100 mile kayak expedition in Everglades National Park is one of their most critically acclaimed creations. Welsh carried a digital video and still camera with him in a tightly packed kayak to capture all of the experiences that he had while trekking through the Everglades. His photography has been published in National Geographic Adventure and South Florida Adventures magazines among others. |
